Port-Vendres is a major port on the Vermeille coast and has a long and varied history dating back to Roman times and is beloved by artists as is its close neighbour Collioure. It has a large fresh fish market and in addition the fishermen still sell their catch from little stalls at the port side. On Saturday morning there is a colourful market on the place d'Obelisque and a Sunday market in Collioure (five minutes by car). Activities locally include sub aqua diving, waterskiing and all the other water sports associated with the sea. Port-Vendres has its little coves for swimming and snorkeling and sandy beaches well . There are boat trips to Spain and short distance trips to Collioure and surrounding areas. With the border of Spain close by there is an opportunity to visit and experience a completely different culture.
